Babcock Family Cemetery, Scipio, Cayuga County, New York
Written by Super UserFrom Stephan Babcock
I have been doing genealogy since 1995. I looked 22 years to find My 3rd G.G. F. , which led to my 4th GGF Worden Babcock who died (abt 1854) and is buried in a family graveyard with 5 of his family members in Scipio, NY on a farm off Hunter Road and Rice Road. I went to NY, found that the cemetery had been plowed under by a farmer. The tombstones were moved and discarded across the southern road and thrown in a tree line. Just a farm field was left. The farmer died about 5 years ago and his two sons took over.
The cemetery was created by Worden Babcock's will, so there was no actual deed. I had to go to the county courthouse and look up all the other deeds that surrounded the cemetery. It measures 42.25 ft x 42.25 ft square. (to make sure I am legal owner) Talking To Gary Allen, the present owner of the land surrounding, (Strict NY laws provide up to 3 years for desecrating a grave) has agreed to let me re-establish the cemetery. He claims no knowledge of it. I do not believe in punishing the son for the sins of the father.

Other_Information: The cemetery in the 1960\'s was overgrown and in disarray. The Town moved all the stones and layed them flat to make mowing easier. So,the stones don\'t actually mark graves anymore and with the stones laid flat they are sinking into the ground and in danger of disappearing(which I believe the Town wants)due to grass covering them. I offered to volunteer my time and at my expense to bring in Gravestone Guardians of Ohio to fix up this small cemetery...but to no avail. There is a Revolutionary War Veteran buried here to add to the shame of how the Town has handled this situation.

Other_Information:
There two corner Limestones, one of which is still standing the other which
is broken and appears to be lying in the middle of the cemetery. The
cemetery has 20 or so bluestone slate headstones. I do not know if they are
just headstones or headstones and footstones. The wood in which the
cemetery is located has some garbage and bottles lying about. I found one
such bottle in the cemetery which I removed. The cemetery was covered with
leaves and debris which I also did my best to remove. The cemtery is
overgrown with trees and the only headstone with an inscription is being
leaned on by a large tree. The stone reads "WILLIAM WARREN Feb 11, 1818
June 8, 1862 HIS WIFE ANN ELIZA May 28, 1820 Jan. 7, 1860"
I know that Ann Eliza was my ggg grandmother and either William or his
brother Joseph was my ggg grandfather. Any help that can be given to save
this cemetery, and the Warren family right to visit and take care of it
would be greatly appreciated!

Description
Located next to IBM Company in Sterling, NY. At entrance of IBM there is a small gravel road leading up to a hill, this is the cemetery. There are no signs for it, an Orange County researcher told me that the name of it, or is it called, is Sterling Mines. I visited this cemetery two weeks ago and I do not know who anyone knows it exists. I was told by this Orange County researcher (genealogy researching on the Orange Co. message board) that IBM bought the property, but preserved the cemetery. I do not know who owns the cemetery, or what or who cares for it. It is not taken care of - there is a small dirt road leading to the cemetery, less than 1/2 mile. It is covered with fallen trees, you cannot drive to the cemetery, but must get out and walk. The cemetery is located in a small clearing at the end of this roadway. The ground is covered with trees, property is very uneven, dangerous to walk. There are about 20 - 25 headstones which stand and are partially readable. The rest have obviously sunk,
