Contacted: WV State and was told they was not responsible for it. The original plat of this cemetery showed roads going up the hill to the cemetery but the state never put the roads in place. You have to walk up the side of the mountain in the woods.

Other Information

When the state of WV moved the bodies to this site they placed metal markers on the graves, since that time the metal markers have all been destroyed or deteriated. Now families can't even locate the site of the actual graves of there loved ones. The graves should of been properly marked when moved by the state so it would be permanent markers. I visited this cemetery and could not believe the graves unmarked and how sad to see the condition of the graves washing away and the huge trees growing out of the graves. Some of the graves have washed out so bad it looked like I could see some of the vaults. This cemetery is located just over the hill from the WV turnpike.

Support

At this time I don't have other support info available. However, I have had so many people contact me in search of loved ones in this same cemetery but couldn't find them due to the condition. Thanks to the state our loved ones are lost in this cemetery. I have a plat of the cemetery.

The cemetery is in awful shape and I for one have lots of family members buried there, and one happens to be a Viet Nam Veteran who gave his life for his country. What an honor for him to have fallen trees, cows roaming over top of him doing their business.

Other_Information:

The cemetery is being destoryed by people that put up an electric fence and ran cattle on it. There is cow dung on the graves. My family members had trouble trying to get in to decorate graves for Memorial. There was an issue with the man that had the cows in there. They have since taken down the electric fence or at least that is the way that I understand it to be. The police were called but did not answer the call for a report to be filed. My family members are working on seeing what can be filed through the Mingo County court system. The list above is a partical list, there are many others that are buried here that have not stones. The Meades, a few of them had homemade stones.

This a good size cemetary. I have visited this cemetary frequently when my Mother was living and have helped clean my relatives graves but it is impossible to even get to the graves now because the vegetation has totally taken over. Local residents say that before they could see the tombstones from their houses but not anymore. I was astonished when I visited there recently that the state & people could allow this to happen. I am unsure as to who to contact on this matter but something needs to be done. There are obviously civil war heroes buried there as I seen tombstones with civil war guns embedded in the tombstones.I was told that the local mines owned the land for the cemetary and alloted plots for workers & families who died. Not sure if this is a true fact but I have family buried there and my Father retired from the mines.
