Other Information

On November 2, 1987, the City of Seattle Engineering Department bulldozed the stones to the street, advised people that they are there for the taking (many were removed), dug a deep trench through the recorded gravesite of Getchell, Edmond P. BW 50 yrs Apr. 16, 1903 SW 1/4 91, and through "babyland" upon which there are now eleven houses. The residents built their homes with the assurances from the City that there was no graveyard near or beneath their homes. They are very disturbed by the reawaking of this cemetery. City of Seattle and King County filed frivilous lawsuits against John Dickinson and the US PER Council (http://i.am/usperc) to prevent the graveyard's restoration. King County claims ownership (disputed) and proceeded to destroy the grounds under the direction of the Washington State Cemetery Association, by permanently setting the stones in their wrong locations and flatly denying the original boundaries and recorded locations. Here is a link to a 1910 photo showing perhaps 100 baby markers above the mourners' heads. These gravesites are now under 11 houses and city streets.

Other_Information:

From depressions in the ground I would guess that there might have been up to 20 graves that are left, sometime within the past 50 years a state road was put right beside this grave yard and I would not be surprised to learn that the road went through the cemetery.

I have no way to determine if this site has ever been reported to you or not.

As a member of the Northport Historical society I have been doing research on this cemetery as our group plans to file for permission to restore and maintain the site

There is a nearly forgotten cemetery on the grounds of The Fox Mill Park in Reston, Fairfax County, Virginia. The entrance to the park is on Fox Mill Road about a mile south of the intersection of Reston Parkway and Lawyers Road. The cemetery is in the wooded area that is directly across from the soccer/football field. It is short distance down a park footpath and is surrounded by a recently erected wooden fence. In addition to severe weathering, the cemetery was terribly vandalized at one time. All the slate grave markers were knocked down and all are broken. There is evidence that there were some carved headstones, there is at least one headstone base and some small, scattered stone pieces, but there are no carved intact or broken pieces of headstones within the cemetery or the immediate surrounding area. After a respectful examination of the slate marker pieces (I tried to disturb them as little as possible) it appear that they may have been painted with names and possibly other information. None could be read at all. I did find two stone pieces that were clearly carved with the initials: JFG and MAB. It appears, from the scattered slate and stone pieces and some ground depressions, that there may have been about, but no more than, 24 grave sites. This is a very, very rough estimate. The cemetery is lacking any name information and therefore I have named it The Fox Mill Park Cemetery. Should I discover the proper name, I will send that information at a later date.
