Can Anyone tell me if they know of any vandalism to Dowty(Douty) Utter's grave at Woods Hill Cemetery in Chilo, Ohio? I mean recently or near in the near past.
While tracing my lineage, this Memorial Day I took my two daughters to the cemetery to show them where their 6g grand father was buried. It looked as if a wrecking crew had attacked the graveyard? I mean not just from weathering and age.
If this is unreported I would like to report it. Dowty's headstone was one seriously damaged. And strewn about. I then had to explain to 2 small children the complex issue of why people do this.
As I have never been faced with this before I have no idea how to proceed.
I'm currently going to contact the Clermont County Historical Society for advisement. But, this lack of respect for an Underground Railroad conductor, Ohio State senator, early pioneer of Ohio, and not to mention his lineage in the American fabric is outrageous (i.e. Edward Douty-Mayflower, and Nicholas Mattson Utter-New Sweden).
This being the year of the Underground Railroad Museum's dedication in Cincinnati a few miles away I'd hope there would be some reaction by someone here in Clermont County.
Any suggestions?

A dirt road borders one side of the cemetery, and a two lane paved road
borders the front. It lies outside of Killbuck about three miles. The
cemetery in Killbuck is a well maintained cemetery. Some of the stone is
sandstone or alabaster I believe.Your Vegitation portion of this Questionair
does not allow you to erase anything.I retire in a couple of years from the
state of Calif, and if able will be glad to assist in Helping to put a new
face on this neglected cemetery.

Update
Willshire Cemetery has a newer and older section. The older section is beyond the trees and next to the river. There are signs of vandalism in both new and old sections. It looks like a quarter of the cemetery has it's tombstones toppled over or broken in half. Nobody bothered to pick them up, they just mowed around them. In the old section you can see many of the old stones dating back to the 1840's. Some are still upright but half buried in the ground. You can tell that a lot of graves are unmarked and people have been throwing the old stones into the river. Some of the older graves are right at the edge of a hill that slopes down to the river below. They have cement markers going around their grave and one of them is eroding over the hill. Pretty soon the casket may start peeking out the edge of the hill. So much needs done in the older section. The cemetery is set in a beautiful area but not maintained like it should be. So much history is here and a lot of the men buried here are veterans.

Contacted: The courts. Lots of research (see mentioned links) &
Letter writing started today. Corporation owned.
Other Information
Total misuse of funds. Bodies have been "trashed" to allow new sales/burials.
Burials of American Revolutions vets are here. Lots of vets from all wars. Tons
of damage! Appears "mild" court cases of trustee. What was the office is now
sold. It's a real mess and we're forming an army to save it!
RECORDS - Wesleyan Burial Records on line (which this appears to be the
same as the published book). (Believe copied from LDS microfilm) ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/oh/hamilton/cemeteries/wesleyan/ ...
Additional details can be found here.
Support
I am gaining support from anyone who cares. All I can say is contact Cincinnati
City Officials, as at this point (July 2001) no one will "claim" responsibility. Our
goal is to save, rehab & document! We've contacted many, including the
Hamilton County Chapter of the Ohio Historical Society

Description
This is an old rural cemetery which has been neglected but one grave has been maintained by the DAR. The maintained grave is of Lewis Boyer, a body guard of George Washington.
Other Problems
I was told this cemetery is being used for cult meetings.
Previous Contacts
I haven't contacted anyone because I didn't know who to contact. I was told the DAR is familiar with the condition of this cemetery so I was satisfied the DAR would take some action to save it. I guess I was wrong.
Current Status
I don't know because I only return to Ohio once a year.

Contacted: The farmer who plows closer daily. The Wayne Co. Cemetery Preservation Society, The Township Trustees, the neighbors of the property. Wayne Co. Sheriffs Dept.
Surnames:
Miller, Reider, Steele
Other Information:
The cemetery headstones were tossed over a hill at the back of the property and are supposedly still there. The hill falls into a railroad bed. The person who bragged about doing this to his neighbors is now deceased. The current owner keeps encroaching on the property. The township mows the little corner left. The Ruritan Club provided the sign designating it as The Steele Cemetery. Deed records show the exact measurements and location of the cemetery by "chains".
